Phillips, Sampson, and Company, Boston 1858 First Edition / First Printing Dated 1858 on the title and copyright pages. Title page in red and black. Vignette title page with 8 plates. Period after the publisher's name on the title page. Binding A with brown cloth and gold gilt lettering at the spine. 3 fleur-de-lis ringed monograms at the spine with the publisher's logo. Endpaper with Works of Permanent Value and Poetry and the Drama. {ref: BAL 8781}. Signed by Oliver Wendell Holmes on a professionally tipped in letter after the vignette title page. The letter is dated November 18 without a year. The inscription says, "My dear (illegible name) I will do it. There (illegible) a before me forever so long to do it, at (illegible name's) request and it shall be done. (Illegible) waiting (illegible) of the Autocrat is (illegible) before (illegible) him. To my friend, and yourself (illegible) him. Yours faithfully. O.W. Holmes.
